I Am Still Alive by: Kate Alice Marshall

Hi everyone! How are you? I hope you are doing very well, It’s 2022! Can you believe it? I sure can’t. I feel like this year has gone by so quickly, I didn’t even try to anticipate the new year because i didn’t know it would begin so soon! Today i will be reviewing a book that i recently re-read. The book’s name is I Am Still Alive by Kate Alice Marshall. But you probably already knew that judging by the title. This is a book that i had read a couple of years ago but didn’t actually enjoy. It was a little bland and a little one noted for me. As i sat on my bed trying to read it i thought to myself ”I can’t read this anymore! Where’s the murder?” So i reluctantly closed up the book and sheepishly put it back on my shelf. I felt kind of bad, i hardly ever stop finishing a book. I have to read it to the end no matter how much i dislike it. I had always regretted not finishing it, so a couple weeks ago when i didn’t have a book to read i decided to try this book out again. And boy was i surprised…. Haha, nice segue way right? Without further ado, please enjoy my review of Kate Alice Marshall’s I Am Still Alive. If you enjoy my review and want to red the book, I encourage every one of you to buy this book at your local bookstore if you can, but also remember that your public library’s can provide you with the book as well. Thank you, and have a great new year and enjoy!

Review: I Am Still Alive is a YA adventure thriller with a climatic ending and a heartwarming relationship at it’s core. This is the first book that have read by Kate Alice Marshall but it certainly won’t be my last. She is a beautiful expressive writer. The book is panned out in a Before and After panel which i always enjoy. Kate Alice Marshall writes in such a poignant decisive manner thats’s oddly refreshing to read. I was completely immersed in the book from start to end and gobbled it up in only a few days. I usually don’t enjoy adventure books, but this was different. There were some many different ideas in the book that it never felt like one pinned down genre. It’s funny because i actually disliked the book the first time that i read it. I might’ve been too young to fully absorb everything that was happening in the book but i don’t think it was that. I believe that when i was younger my taste in books was rather one toned. I only really liked books about murder, or teenagers suffering from dramatic experiences. Now that i’m older i have a broader and more refined taste for books so i can enjoy more of a variety of books. This book was definitely a 9.5 for me and i would suggest it to anyone who enjoys a immersive, thrilling book for all audiences. As i said before, i encourage you to pick this up at your local bookstore (preferably not Indigo) or your library ti support small businesses if you enjoy this review. Thank you for reading, i hope you have a happy, healthy joyous new year! See you soon!

They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera

Hello everyone, how are you doing? I hope you are doing well. Today i will be reviewing a book that i love, its called They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera. I have read this book numerous times and i have decided to review it because i find it so entertaining and very well written. So today i would like to share my opinions and feelings towards this book. If you have the chance to read this incredible book i would. It will make you feel things in a completely different way then you have experienced them. So without further ado, lets start the review.

It’s called Last Friend, and through it. Rufus and Mateo meet up for one final epic adventure- to live a lifetime in a single day.

Review:

They Both Die At The End is a incredibly emotional, well written book. It is perfect for ages 12-14 years of age. It has a little bit of content that may not be the best for younger kids including a conversation about teen pregnancy and a bit of kissing however i believe that it is fine for all ages. When i first read this book i truly believed that it was one of the most incredible books i had ever read, and i still believe that. I haven’t read much of Adam Silvera i believe that he is a fairly new writer which is maybe why i haven’t heard much of him. This book really opened up my eyes and showed me a story that had completely different characters and a very different storyline that i was used to. This book puts a wonderful perspective on friendship, love and not taking advantage of what you are given. This book has a serious crying warning. The end will break you. I may have cried for 30 minutes or so. I am almost 100% percent sure that their are permanent tear marks on that book.

I really hope you enjoyed this review! i enjoyed writing it! If you have any book suggestions or any musical suggestions please tell me because i am always in need of new content. I hope you have a wonderful day and i will see you next week! Bye!

Everybody’s Talking About Jamie Review

Hi everyone, how are you? i hope your doing well. Today i am going to be reviewing the movie version of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie which just recently came out on Friday. I had the pleasure of watching this musical live, and i instantly fell in love with it. Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is about a young boy named Jamie who lives in a small town in Sheffield England with his mom. Jamie has always felt like an outcast and a loner because he is gay. Something has never felt right with him. Jamie realizes that the thing he wants to do most in the world is to be a drag queen. So he decides that he is going to try drag. Jamie becomes a sensation and has never felt better about himself, so he decides that he is going to wear a dress to his high school prom. It is not only an empowering story about a boy who tries to find his identity, it is also a beautiful story about a mother and son relationship and how they navigate the hardships of everyday life together.

I thought that this movie version of the musical was lovely. It had a wonderful tone and it was so heartwarming. The actor who played the lead was very real. He looked so young and quite innocent and it played well in the movie. I must say i cried for almost the entirety of the movie. I would recommend this movie if you love a story with a great plot, quirky characters, and incredibly catchy songs. Thank you so much for reading this, i know that this is a short review but i promise next week my review will be longer.

Have a good week everyone!

REVIEW:

Before we get started I just wanted to say, that I am very sorry I have not done a book review in such a long time. I was so focused on the other part of my blog that for a minute I forgot what this blog originally was. My thoughts on books, so with that in mind I hope you enjoy my review on Julie Murphy’s third book…. Pumpkin!

Hello! I hope you are all doing very well. Today I will be reviewing the YA/Fiction/LGBTQQIP2SAA+ novel by Julie Murphy…. Pumpkin! This is actually Julie Murphy’s third book and when I tell you that it made my heart warm for days, you’d better believe me. This book is a little different from her other books although not to different. It is about a flamboyant gay boy named Waylon who lives in the fictional town of Clover City. He loves drag and decides that he will audition for his favourite drag tv show Fiercest Of Them All. However when the audition video leaks he is in a bit of a situation not to mention the fact that he and his sisters girlfriend are nominated for prom Queen and king. I loved this book. It was so lighthearted and inspiring. It made me feel super happy and energetic. Julie is such a wonderful immersive writer and she writes so real and truthfully that you fully believe that it’s not made up. All of the characters are very well made and the story is incredibly well executed. I really enjoyed this book and hope that Julie Murphy will continue this beautiful picture of a small town in Texas. I hope you enjoyed this review. If you have any books you would like me to read that would be wonderful a always enjoy it.

thank you!

In The Heights Review

Hello everyone, how are you doing? Today I’m going to be doing a review that I’ve really been wanting too do. Around 5 weeks ago I was introduced to a new musical. It was called In The Heights. It is written by one of the most prominent musical theatre composers of our generation, Lin Manuel Miranda, who wrote the world renowned musical Hamilton. But before he wrote Hamilton he wrote In The Heights. So today i will be reviewing this musical. I hope you enjoy! If you have a favourite musical or a favourite book please reach out to me so i can listen to it or read it! I’m always interested in different things. Thank you, and enjoy!

In 2002, a 28 year old man named Lin Manuel decided to write a musical. He had just graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown Connecticut, and hadn’t been getting any work. He was originally from Puerto Rico, but he was born in Washington Heights. He had an idea. He thought it would be very interesting to write a musical about a neighbourhood that had a very large Latino following and community. What would it be like if he wrote a musical about love and loss and friendship and family inside this small rough neighbourhood . The idea of In The Heights was born. It took Lin Manuel Miranda 4 years to fully write In The Heights. But finally after years of working hard he had finally done it. He had written a musical. And what a musical it was. In The Heights had lots of well known actors and actresses including Christopher Jackson, Karen Olivia and even Lin Manuel Miranda himself playing the leading man, Usnavi. It was even part of the Tony awards. It was nominated 13 times and won four awards including Best Musical. It is a significant part of musical theatre today because it talked about a part of the New York community which wasn’t talked about.

In The Heights is about a small community of Latino and Puerto Rican people living in Washington Heights. The show has many themes like friendship, love, dreams and family, But its also about being a community and respecting each other. The leading man’s name is Usnavi and he runs a bodega in the middle of Washington Heights and is friends with everyone. But he’s low on money. He’s in debt and not making enough to support his little cousin Sonny and his Abuela (which means grandmother in Spanish). He is in love with a girl named Vanessa. Vanessa is a gorgeous, smart, intelligent young girl who works at the salon with the two mian gossipers of the community Daniela and Carla. All of the boys are completely heart-struck and in love with her. She desperately wants to move away from Washington Heights because she feels like its holding her back. Meanwhile another young woman named Nina has just come back from Standford where she was taking her college courses at. However she got expelled because of the lack of work that she was putting in. Throughout two whole days a series of experiences happen like a black pout that leaves the whole neighborhood dark, a love triangle, betrayal, and most importantly a sense of moving on and dreams.

In conclusion In The Heights is an absolutely beautiful, emotional and well curated musical that would recommend to all ages. It makes me cry, it makes me laugh it makes me feel right. All of the actors are incredibley talented and all of the songs are incredible! If you enjoy the soundtrack go onto HBO Max and watch the In The Heights movie coming out on June 11th! I’m sure it will be incredible! I hope everyone has a great day and stays safe!

Thanks for reading!

Next To Normal Review

Hi everyone, how are you? I hope your doing well and that you’re having a nice spring. Today I will be reviewing the musical Next To Normal written by Brian Yorker. Next To Normal is a lyrical musical about a woman who struggles with mental illness and the impact it has on her family. I recently listened to this musical because one of my friends told me that it was a beautiful musical with a great plot and lovely songs. My demands were met when I listened to the opening song, Just Another Day. It introduces us to the characters. We see that the main character Dianna has a normal suburban life. She lives with her husband, daughter and son. But when we listen to the song for a little more time we realize that Dianna is quite unwell. She has bipolar disorder and has hallucinations, and anxiety. I was taken aback by the story and the way that the actors and actresses played the characters so well even through the soundtrack. One of my favourite things about Next To Normal is the way that the songs told the story in a way that was fluent and precise. It was very satisfying to hear. Each song would range from upbeat and loud, to soft and calm, and yet each time they played a different song I could think about what dialogue they had said between each song. It was a very interesting listening process. I was never bored. One of my favourite songs was Who’s Crazy/ My Psychopharmacologist And I. They were two songs mixed together. One of them is a song sung by Dan, Dianna’s husband. He talks about how before Dianna’s disorder she used to be very happy. Bubbly, bright and smart. He tells the audience that he wishes it didn’t have to change. The other song talks about Dianna’s Psychopharmacologist and her relationship with him. The doctor talks about Dianna’s state of mind and how stable she is throughout the song. I like this song because of the way the songs meld together. They are both somewhat upbeat. I love the way the melody joins the actual lyrics. The way the songs are blocked out is genius. I would be lying if I told you that I had a favourite character. Usually when I listen or watch something I instantly have a character that I relate to so when I listened to Next To Normal i was surprised that there wasn’t a character that I liked more than others. I liked all the characters equally. I think one of the reasons that I had neutral opinions on all of them was because I didn’t feel like a related to any of the characters. Obviously all of the characters have issues and mental illnesses like bipolar, OCD, anxiety and eating disorders. I haven’t experienced this first hand which is why I don’t relate to the characters. I thought that this musical was absolutely beautiful. It made me cry numerous occasions. I hope you enjoyed this review! If you have any suggestions about what I should review next please tell me I am always looking for new musicals. If you like books please tell me if you have any books that you love I would love to read you. Thank you! I hope you’re all having a great day! See you soon!

My Dream Roles in Musicals

Hi Everyone! How are you doing, I hope your doing very very well. I am very excited today. Because today is going to hopefully be a very fun blog to write but also to read. I was pondering on whether or not I should write this blog or not and i suddenly realized that because I’m sick of COVID 19 and want to go see theatre it would be a nice pick me up. Today I am going to be counting down and explaining my dream roles in some of my favourite musicals. Now obviously I have hundreds of roles I would want to play, (probably too many to count) so today I’ll just be listing my top 20. Let’s jump into it.

20: Coming up at number 20 is a character from one of my favourite musicals of all time and that is….. Chicago! I would love to play Roxie Hart. Roxie is such a feisty, powerful character and I love all of the different women who have played her in the past. Now you might be thinking, “that’s a little weird. Why does she want to play a murderer?” Well I’ll tell you why. There’s something enticing about Roxie that I’m in love with. She has a sort of halo of character around her which I love. I think she would be really fun to play. Plus I could get to dress up as a puppet in They Both Reached For The Gun which would be awesome.

19: Number 19 is one that I would not fit the part for at all but I think would be really fun to play and that is… a gender bend role in Be More Chill as Michael Mell! Michael is such a sweet humorous character. I think he’s the best character in the show. I would love it if there was an opposites attract relationship between Jeremy who I think should still be played by a male, so that there would obviously be that sweet innocence of Jeremys love for Christine in the show still. Although I don’t like the character of Jeremy his relationship with Christine is very cute. I would love to play Michael just because I would be able to sit in a bathtub and sing my heart out to Michael In The Bathroom every night. A side note, I would like to be addressed as Michele so they could change the song to Michele In The Bathroom.

18: Coming up in 18th place is…. Alyssa Greene from The Prom. I’ve talked about The Prom before on my blog, where I did a reaction to The Prom movie with Ariana Debose as Alyssa and if you have read the blog post you can obviously tell that I loved the movie. I was into The Prom before the movie came out but I enjoyed the movie so much that it made me love the show more. Ever since the start of listening to it I have always loved Alyssa. She may not be my favourite character (Spoiler: Angie rights!!) but I still love her character to bits. Alyssa would be such a wonderful character to play, so.. Broadway in ten years or so if you want an Alyssa call me.

17: Number 17 is something I’m quite acquainted with. I would love to play Miss Hannigan in Annie. I have already been in Annie and I played Annie, but I have always wanted to play Miss Hannigan. She’s such a comedic role, I have so much love for her. Her one liners are completely iconic and she has one of the best songs in the show. Little Girls. In the 1982 version when she’s singing and the girls turn into arm chairs and she sits on them. Beautiful! Not for the girls but for the comedic timing. Also she’s a villain and I love villains. The reason why you’ll see so many is because I’m more of the best friend side kick character so villains really appeal to me.

16: two words Ado Annie! God isn’t she just the best! Such a wonderful character. Oklahoma was one of the first musicals that I listened to when I was little. And I always loved Ado Annie. I Caint Say No! Is just a wonderful tune. We love a flirty queen. A while ago maybe two years, i went to New York with my grandmother and we went to see Oklahoma off of Broadway. And do you know who played Ado Annie! Ali Stroker! Not the first disabled women to win a tony!! She was incredible and I was blown away by her performance. If you want to see talent go check her out! So yeah Ado Annie would be amazing to play.

15: warning: Sondheim alert! Cinderella from Into The Woods. I mean come on, she’s funny, she’s sweet and she’s completely oblivious to everyone’s else’s problems. That’s what I call a good character. On The Steps Of The Palace has to be one of my favourite songs from that show. I love Into The Woods it may be my favourite Sondheim show. I’m sorry if that personally offends anyone and please tell me what you think is the best Sondheim musical but that’s just my opinion. I love the character of Cinderella and I think she’d be really fun to play.

14: My 14th dream role is Winnie Foster from Tuck Everlasting. Tuck Everlasting may be the most underrated musical of all time. The story is brilliant the composition and the lyrics are gorgeous and Winnie is my age. 11! Good Girl Winnie Foster! Ugh! Gorgeous gorgeous song! I’m in love with this show, and not only that but it has Andrew Keenan Bolger! Who was in Newsies! Who doesn’t love Newsies! It’s a bunch of boys singing and dancing! Who doesn’t love that! Anyways I think it would be really cool to play Winnie from Tuck because she’s such a cool character and i think I’d quite good. Not to toot my own horn but I think I’d be wonderful.

13: Okay, so I know that this is a really basic character but I would love to play Cady from Mean Girls! I think that the writers didn’t make her as good of a character as she should have been. If they had written her better she would have been such a more likeable character instead of this predictable vanilla character. I think that Stupid With Love is a gorgeous song and deserves more recognition. Take the spotlight off of Someone Gets Hurt for a moment and let it put onto Stupid With Love please! I would love to play Cady and I think that she’d be very fun to play.

12: number 12 is Barbara from Beetlejuice! She is an icon, she is a legend and she is the moment. I am obsessed with her. Her character is so kooky and sweet and she’s so innocent. She’s the good kind of vanilla. Plus she’s played by Kerry Butler! Oh lord of mercy I could talk about Kerry Butler for days, but I won’t. I love Kerry Butler so so so much! And she was the perfect actress for Barbara! anyways Barbara is one of my dream roles for sure.

11: Wendla from Spring Awakening! Oh, Spring Awakening is perfection in my personal opinion. I mean come on we have our Broadway dream team. Johnathan Groff who if was straight I would ask to marry which is completely illegal but it’s fine and Lea Michele. Listen I know she’s done terrible things but you can’t deny the girls got a voice. Wendla is just so perfect and I love and I think I’d be great as her.

10: Okay guys, here it is. We’ve reached the top ten. Number ten is Zoe Murphy from Dear Evan Hansen. Zoe deserved better!!! Guys she deserved better. She was the best character in the show hands down. Reqieum. Ugh! It makes me cry every time I hear it. What I like about Zoe is that she’s a very normal character. I know no one is normal but she isn’t crazy. She’s a very down to earth person trying to deal with the ups and downs of life. I would love to play her.

9: Chris from Carrie. Carrie another underrated musical. Chris was the best character. She carried that show. The World According To Chris is such a bop. And like I said, I love villains. She’d be such a fun exciting character to play.

8: Fanny Brice from Funny Girl. Oh god! I love this show. It’s the best. Barbara Streisand is the goddess of musical theatre! And I think Fanny would just be the funnest role to play. Obviously it’ll never happen because their never putting on Funny Girl again. 😢

7: Veronica Sawyer from Heathers!! There’s nothing to say about that one. She’d be so fun to play.

6: Satine from Moulin Rouge. I love a good dramatic death. Satine is such a beautiful character and I would die to play her. Not literally.

5: KATHERINE HOWARD FROM SIX!!!! Oh my god! Can we just admit that Howard carried the show! Best character! I would love to play her. She’s so feisty, so dramatic and so heartbreakingly misunderstood. All You Wanna Do is a bop. Period.

And now: the moment you’ve all been waiting for: my four Broadway dream roles are: Adelaide from Guys and Dolls, Matilda from Matilda, Elphaba from Wicked and number one……. Dawn from Waitress!

thanks for reading. I’m so sorry if I have bored you to death I just felt like this would be fun. Please like my posts or become a subscriber and read all of my posts. I hope you all have a great day! Bye!

Let’s Talk About Heathers!

Hey guys! How are you? I hope your well and that 2021 is off to a good start for you personally. Today we will be chatting about one of my all time favourite musicals… Heathers! Yes! That cult classic that was originally a movie starring, the one the only… Winona Ryder! It became such a huge hit that in 2010 they had the first performance of Heathers the musical. I could talk about Heathers all day, literally all day, but i won’t because you all have better things to do than read me ranting about musical theatre and literature. What i want to start off this blog post with however is a question. Why did Heathers become such a big deal! Well the first thing we have to look at is the film. The movie version of Heathers was directed by Michael Lehmann. He had directed and wrote things in the past and although they were successful nothing became as world renowned as Heathers did. I think one of the reasons why Heathers became so popular was because Winona Ryder starred as Veronica Sawyer. People had watched Winona grow up. We saw her as Lydia Deetz in Beetlejuice (which is yes also a musical), we saw her in Stranger Things before it became huge. Everyone was rooting for Winona since she was little, so automatically people were excited for this movie to come out. It was also the 80’s and in this time period people were very into the whole goth, dark comedy trend. Girls started dressing “emo”, and people were making more things that had a bit of a dark edge to it. Heathers is a very dark show. Three murders happen, one person tries to commit suicide and one person pretends to hang themselves. See, your already getting really nice vibes. So i think that these components really tie into one another. We already have two big factors of Heathers importance. Winona Ryder and the emo/dark comedy trend. Another thing that i have frequently noticed is the importance of Heathers as a show. It’s about an outcast, a nerdy teenaged girl who just wants to fit in so she joins a trio of psychology unstable teenage girls. Don’t worry its not as bad as it sounds. I think that teens who we’re emo, or felt like outcasts and misfits really related to Heathers. Not in the serial killer kid of way but in the way that nobody understood them. So when Heathers came out in the movie theatres people were really excited to see it. Now that we’ve talked about the movie lets dive deep into the musical, and see how it got so big. I have three words for you… Barret Wilbert Weed! We STAN! She is a legend, a icon! She’s been in Lysistrata, Bare the musical, FOUND the musical, Heathers (of course), Dear Evan Hansen, Cabaret and Mean Girls. She is incredibly talented and i look up to her as a role model in her professional career very much. So it was natural for any one who is a fan of Barret’s to want to see Heathers. It became a huge Broadway show that has a planted place in musical theatre history forever. I really hope you guys enjoyed this review! I might do a Heathers Character review soon, but until then i just wanted to say that i hope you have a great day and stay healthy!

Bye!

Be More Chill Review

Hey Guys! So, recently i did my first musical theatre blog on The Prom movie. I thought that it was really amazing and I’ve watched it three times already. A couple of days after i did that review i was watching a video made by my favourite YouTuber. Her name is Amy Lovett and she does videos on things like Broadway, musicals, StarKid, Glee and Smash. If you like any of those things you should check her out. So anyways, i was watching one of her videos. In the particular video that i was watching, she was talking about her top 10 favourite musical theatre songs performed in 2019. Michael In The Bathroom, the emotional ballad that has now become the musical theatre kid anthem was number 3 on her list. I take her Broadway knowledge very seriously, so right after i watched the video i went onto Apple Music and listened to Michael In The Bathroom. I loved it! The song is incredibly emotional, and Michael has so much anger in his voice throughout the song that it really makes it feel real. I am a huge fan of George Salazar’s his voice is so innocent and pure. The song was made for him. I ended up learning all of the lyrics and now i can sing it! I decided that i would listen to the whole musical. I was in awe! It’s an incredible musical. And i have been obsessively listening to the Broadway soundtrack for a couple weeks. This blog post is going to be about my thoughts on Be More Chill.

I want to start this review by giving you a small synopsis of Be More Chill. Jeremy is a loner. He’s sad, lonely, nerdy and not a naturally attractive teen. His only friend is Michael. Who just like him is a loner. Jeremy has a secret, he has a massive crush on a girl named Christine. Christine has a huge passion for theatre and struggles with ADD. He’s too shy to come out and say he loves her. Jeremy gets bullied by a group of popular boys in his school. One of them is named Rich. One day after school Rich comes up to Jeremy and tells him how he got popular. he says it’s all because of his SQUIP. A Super Quantum Unit Intel Processor. He tells Jeremy if he wants to be cool he should get one. Jeremy obliges and he buys a SQUIP. Causing drama and action he never thought he would make. This musical is incredible. The songs in it are super amazing. There is a wide variety between classic musical theatre, rock, and pop. I think just like my last review i will do a short character summary.

Jeremy: okay i’ll be honest i dislike Jeremy with a burning passion. Honestly, he’s just a straight up jerk. He abandoned Michael, he broke Brooke’s heart, and he was actually dumb enough to listen to the SQUIP talk badly about him. All in all just a terrible character. But that’s just my opinion. However, Will Connolly is very talented, and has a nice voice. Very pure. Although he lacks emotion in some songs.

the SQUIP: I hate the SQUIP. Thats just it.

Michael: Michael is one of my favourite characters in BMC. He’s so sweet, he’s such a loner. But he loves Jeremy and wants to be his friend forever. Michael In The Bathroom is the best song in Be More Chill and everyone knows it. It’s a heartbreaking song, and every time i listen to i love it. Let’s talk about George Salazar. Oh My God!! What a talented man! Genuinely one of the most talented male Broadway stars in the 21st century i can think of. His voice makes my heart melt. He just baffles me with his talent.

Christine. And finally Christine. I mean what is there to say. Christine is my all time favourite character in Be More Chill. She is so sweet, and eccentric, and weird. She has some of the best songs in the show. Stephanie Hsu is such an incredibly talented actress. She fits the role of Christine perfectly.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this! I hope you all have an amazing Christmas! See you soon!

A Review of THE PROM (the movie)

Hi Guys! How are you? I’m doing great! Now as some of you may know, originally this blog was an outlet where i shared my opinions about some of my favourite books and reviewed them, but a couple days ago i had a really cool idea… what if i changed my blog into a site where I didn’t just do reviews of books but also shared my opinions on musical theatre and Broadway! So this is what the blog is permanently going to be from now on. Today’s blog post is going to be about my reaction to THE PROM movie that came out yesterday! I hope you enjoy!

Okay, so if any of you are big fans of musical theatre and Broadway you would know that there had been rumours of the Tony award winning musical, THE PROM turning into a Netflix movie. Well, apparently those rumours were correct because just yesterday it came out on Netflix! Now when I heard that THE PROM was turning into a movie i was a bit sceptical. Turning a huge modern musical into a Netflix movie seemed like a very bold choice to make, however when i heard the cast of the movie to be, my opinion totally changed. The cast included Jo Ellen Pellman, Nicole Kidman (yes! I know i was very excited when i heard that), Ariana Debose (who is a Broadway actress. She played The Bullet in the original version of Hamilton), Meryl Streep (yes Ms. Streep has made an appearance) James Corden and many others! Although the cast seemed amazing to me, what really made me excited was when i heard that Ryan Murphy was directing it! I am a huge fan of his, because he directed my all time favourite show GLEE! I had been a fan of the musical THE PROM before i figured out that it was going to be adapted into a movie so i thought it was an amazing idea! I actually put a note in my calendar setting a time and date for me to watch it! Yesterday, it came out on Netflix, but i had forgotten that it was coming out on that day! Luckily my friend was alert and told me that it had come out! After school i watched it with my parents! It was A…M…A…Z…I…N…G…!! I lip synched to each and every song, i cried, i laughed and had a incredibly enjoyable experience! For any of you who don’t know, THE PROM is about a teenage girl Emma who happens to be gay. She has been secretly dating her girlfriend Alyssa for 1 year in secret, because Alyssa is too afraid to go out in public, since her mother is a conservative women and doesn’t believe in people who are in the LGBTQ community. Emma wants to take Alyssa to prom, where she will tell her forbidding mother that she is in fact gay and has been dating someone for a year and a half without her mother knowing. But when the PTA here’s about the rumours that she is going to bring her anonymous girlfriend to the prom the PTA and Alyssa’s mother go nuts. They don’t want a “homosexual” prom. So they officially ban prom from happening altogether. While this is happening two liberal Broadway stars, Dee Dee Allen and Barry Glickman finish there opening night of ELEANOR! the musical. The New York Times review comes in and says that the show is a bomb. They close on opening night! There good friend Sheldon tells them that there just not likeable. Narcissistic spoiled actors! They decide that they need to find a cause to show the world that they’re good people. One of they’re fellow actors and friends Angie Dickinson sees Emma’s story on Twitter and they decide that they’re going to save her prom. Causing a lot of drama and some banging songs!

I decided that I wanted to do a quick review of each character in THE PROM and share my opinions about them. So here it goes!

Emma: Emma is the main character in THE PROM, and one of my favourites. She’s so wholesome, so sweet. Jo Ellen Pellman is an incredible actress! She has a great way of being a optimistic teen who has had to go through some heartbreaking things! She was definitely the character who made me cry the most. When she sang the Tonight Belongs To You (Reprise)! That was so emotional! My cheeks were soaked with tears! Jo Ellen Pellman also has a incredible voice. Very pure, her own. She’s not trying to copy or mimic someone. When she sang Just Breathe the third song in the movie I gave her a standing ovation and clapped. She really captured Emma’s spirit in that particular song.

Dee Dee Allen: Okay, how can you not love Dee Dee Allen! I mean she’s sarcastic, dramatic, funny (yes a little spoiled and narcissistic but what a character!) The Lady’s Improving has to be one of my favourite songs, not just in the movie but in the show as well! Meryl Streep was the perfect person to play Dee Dee because of her spirit and fiery energy! You could see that she was having loads of fun throughout the whole movie! I was also very impressed by her vocal range and belting skills! I mean we all know that she rocked as Donna Sheridan in Mamma Mia! But I didn’t know her vocals were so nice! Very smooth and fiery! She surprised me! I was very happy with the way Dee Dee turned out!

Barry: So I’m going to admit something here…. Barry Glickman is my all time favourite character in THE PROM! He’s so sweet, and innocent! He’s gone through so much, and his character is just amazing throughout the entire movie and musical. Now as we all know whenever someone needs a male star in a movie musical adaptation they call James Corden. I mean the mans been in Into The Woods, Cats, Trolls and more! I was very surprised by his portrayal of Barry. It was definitely the best thing that I’ve seen James Corden do! He was emotional, vulnerable and just truly fabulous!

Alyssa: Alyssa Green is certainly a wonderful character. She’s very shy, and wants perfection in everything she does. I love her character and think her relationship with Emma is so sweet and romantic. I am a huge fan of Ariana Dubois. Her voice is INCREDIBLE! The girl can belt. Her big showstopper however: Alyssa Green? genuinely beautiful! It’s my favourite song in the show so i was wondering how they would choose to do it! But it was amazing! The song is so deep and lovely, plus it gives us a great back story on Alyssa’s journey and her relationship with her mother. All in all i was very impressed with Ariana Dubois and her theatrical choices throughout the entire movie.

I’m so sorry I didn’t get to go deeper into the secondary characters like: Angie, Trent and Mr. Hawkins but this is a very long blog post so i didn’t want to keep all of you up all night reading my opinions! I really hope you enjoyed this! Thanks for reading!
