Hello everyone, how are you? I hope you’re doing very well. Today I thought that I would share my musical theatre dream roles with all of you. Two years ago almost to this day, I wrote and published a blog post about my musical theatre dream roles that year. I thought that today I would share an updated version of that original blog post. I thought that this would be an interesting post to write just to visually see the growth and change 2 years later. I also thought that it would be interesting to post the dream roles that I had listed two years ago as a visualization of the growth over the years. So with that being said, enjoy!

2022 Dream Roles:
Street Urchin in Little Shop Of Horrors: I would love to play one of the street urchins in Little Shop Of Horrors. The three women are based off of 50’s and 60’s girl groups and so the music and songs that the street urchins perform in the show are very much written to memorialize that time. The street urchins dance, sing, and have sizeable roles in the show and I think that it would be a blast to perform in the show.
Janet Van De Graff in Drowsy Chaperone: I love the Drowsy Chaperone. I was introduced to this musical roughly a year ago and it changed my perception of contemporary musical theatre. I think that it is a well crafted, well performed musical and I would die if given the opportunity to play Janet Van De Graff. Janet is a retired showgirl who decides to give up her career for marriage. I love this character with my whole heart. She has such a huge heart and is filled with vivacious energy. The song “Show Off” is one of my favourite contemporary numbers and it would be a privilege to perform it on stage.
Eurydice in Jasper In Deadland: This is a musical that I have recently discovered and have fallen in love with. Jasper in Deadland is a play on the infamous greets myths, but with a modern twist. It’s a classic contemporary rock musical and it would be so much fun to be in a show like it. I would specifically love to play the character of Eurydice. Her solo “Lifesong” never fails to make me emotional and it’s a perfect ballad for a mezzo soprano/soprano performer.
Maggie Winslow in A Chorus Line: A Chorus Line has to be my favourite musical. I love everything about it. The text, the songs, the concept. I have wanted to be in A Chorus Line since I was a little girl but specifically I’ve always wanted to play Maggie. She is a character very much alike to my own self and so I can easily relate to the issues and prejudice that she faces throughout the show. She’s written as a very goody two shoes all American sweetheart type, and I would love to play the role.
Mary in Merrily We Roll Along: Merrily We Roll Along has to be my favourite Sondheim show. I think it’s an exceptionally written musical with a heartfelt plot and some of his best crafted songs. I would love to portray the character of Mary. I feel that she is such a versatile character and I believe that I could portray the character in a very different and newly interpreted way. As a little bonus “Old Friend” is one of my favourite musical theatre numbers and it would be a privilege to sing it on stage.
Hedda Hopper in Chaplin: I love this musical. I never thought that I would enjoy a musical about Charlie Chaplin’s life but it is genuinely so expertly written and performed it has made me rethink quite a lot. I’ve always been interested in Hedda Hopper. Especially her relationship with Charlie Chaplin. The song “All Falls Down” perfectly depicts their relationship and the character that Hedda Hopper was. I am a classical soprano type so I’m not usually suited for jazzy/sexy/alto musical theatre numbers but I would LOVE to perform this showstopper in front of an audience. It’s such a well crafted song and I feel that there is so much characterization and personal flair that can be added.
Christine in Phantom Of The Opera: Remember when I just mentioned that I was a classical soprano type of performer, well this is when my strengths can be used in advantage. I guarantee that if you ask any female soprano performer what one of their musical theatre dream roles is they will answer Christine in Phantom Of The Opera. I am no exception. I love this musical. I love this character and I LOVE this music. Phantom Of The Opera will always remain as my favourite classical musical. It is expertly written by the one and only Andrew Loyd Webber and I love the concept. One of my many theatrical dreams is to perform “Think Of Me” in front of a sold out audience.
